I followed Dee Christopher's pattern for this calm shell log cabin quilt. I found it easiest to just cut a 1 1/4 inch square and then 1 1/4 inch strips for the wide strips and 7/8 inch strips for the narrow strips instead of following her directions of cutting the lengths for the wide and narrow strip sets. I just trimmed up as I stitched around the log cabin. The important part is figuring out which block starts off clockwise and which block starts counter clockwise. The top right of the clam shell starts clockwise, top left starts counter clockwise, bottom left clockwise, bottom right counter clockwise.
The top half of calm shell uses the wide strips and the bottom half is narrow strips.
